If you feel that your website is being penalized or was banned by Google, it doesn’t mean that the damage is permanent. The first and most important thing to do is to try and determine why Google is not happy with your website. It could be because you linked to spam sites or got caught selling links without the “nofollow” tag. It is often difficult to tell what the exact problem is.
In some instances, Google’s webmaster tools can be helpful in determining where the problem might be. If you can’t find any clues there, try dropping a question into the Google help forums and see if there is someone that can help you identify any potential issues. Once you are able to figure out the problem, you can begin to correct the issue and ask for forgiveness.
If Google caught you doing something in violation of their terms of service, you will have to correct the problem before they will consider re-listing your site. The good news is that it is possible to be forgiven and get back into the search results. Once you believe you have corrected any potential problems with your site, follow the steps below to request reconsideration:
- Add your website to your Google Webmaster Tools account and verify site ownership.
- Sign in to Webmaster Tools.
- On the dashboard, under Talk to Google in the list on the right, click Request reconsideration and follow the steps.
Reconsideration of a website can take several days, but is usually done fairly quickly. Keep in mind that even if Google notifies you that your site is now ok, it may take a week or two before you see it start to be indexed properly.
Hopefully you won’t have to bother with these steps, but mistakes happen and sometimes bad domains are sold to good people. At least your fate is not set in stone and forgiveness can be obtained.
